The 3 Main Types of safety glass available are listed below
Laminated Glass
This is made up of 2 squares of glass with a plastic resin in between. The advantage of this type of glass is that if someone was to break the window the glass remains in one piece. This minimises the chance of some one badly hurting themselves and also makes it harder for someone to gain access to your premises. This is particularly good for schools where broken glass scattered through childrens belongings and school resorces can be a serious hazard
Toughened Glass
This is glass that has been cut to the needed size and then put through a furnace to rapidly heat and then cool the glass. This causes the pane to become much stronger than before making it harder to break. The advantage of this sort of glass is that if it were to get broken then the glass shatters into small fragments minimising the chance of someone being badly hurt as there are no sharp shards to peirce the skin.
Wired Glass
This is only a B grade safety glass and although the wires will hold the broken glass togeather the sharp fragments and broken wires can cause considerable damage if the force is great enough to penetrate the pane. This glass comes in both clear (Polished wire) & Obscure(Squarelite). This glass is used in places when a fire rating is needed such as smoke stop doors, as the wire holds the melting or broken glass togeather for a period of time inhibiting the spread of fire.
